Discord Nickname Style: Display Names, Server Nicknames and Usernames

A Discord nickname style is a styled display name or server nickname with Unicode letters, symbols and emoji. Display names allow 1 to 32 characters including emoji, while usernames only take lowercase a to z, numbers, underscores and periods and can change twice a week.

Discord nickname style: styled display names next to a plain lowercase username on a violet-lit gaming desk

A Discord nickname style is a styled display name or server nickname made from Unicode letters, symbols and emoji. Discord allows these in your display name (up to 32 characters) and in per-server nicknames, but not in your username, which is lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods only. Style a name in the tool above and paste it into User Settings → Profiles.

Every name must also follow Discord’s Community Guidelines, which rule out names that impersonate Discord, its staff, a person or an organisation, attack people, or contain sexually explicit language.

How styles use Discord’s 32-character limit (tested 09/2026)

Discord states a 32-character maximum but not how a styled character is counted. We measured “Aryan the Night Owl” in eight styles on 13 September 2026 by code points, UTF-16 units and visible characters, so you can see which styles still fit if Discord counts the larger number.

StyleDisplay nameCode pointsUTF-16 unitsVisible characters
Plain191919
Small caps212121
Japan212121
Art213721
Bold italic213721
Classic213821
Tiny capitals232323
Hook212121

Small caps, Japanese-look and hook letters stay close to the plain length. Mathematical styles such as Art, Classic and Bold italic cross 32 UTF-16 units for this four-word name, so if the box refuses a long styled name, those are the ones to swap. All letter sets are compared in the nickname font style guide.

Discord display name styles

Your display name is how you appear in DMs and in servers without a nickname. On desktop, change it under User Settings → My Account → Profiles.

Server nickname styles and how to set one

A server nickname replaces your display name in one server only. On desktop, right-click your name in the member list or on one of your messages and choose Edit per-server profile, or type /nick followed by the nickname in a text channel. If the server has not given your role the Change Nickname permission, none of these options work. Anyone can still open your profile and see your real username.

Discord username ideas that pass the rules

Discord usernames checked against the rules: lowercase letters, numbers, underscore and period, no two periods in a row
Periods and underscores are the only styling a username gets.

We checked each candidate against Discord’s published username rules. If the one you want is taken, Discord suggests adding numbers, underscores or periods.

Other platforms draw the same line between a styled name and a plain handle; WhatsApp’s version, with a slightly different character set, is in the WhatsApp nickname style guide.

Discord nickname style FAQ

Can I use fancy fonts in my Discord username?

No. Discord’s support article says usernames are restricted to Latin letters, numbers, underscores and periods. Use the styled version as your display name or a server nickname.

Why can’t I change my nickname in a server?

Your role doesn’t have the Change Nickname permission. Ask the server owner or an administrator; until then the menu option and the /nick command won’t work.

Which name do people see first?

A friend nickname or server nickname wins where it is set; otherwise people see your display name. Your username mainly identifies you in friend requests and on your profile.

How often can I change my Discord username?

Up to two times per week, according to Discord Support. Display names and server nicknames can be changed much more freely.
