A WhatsApp nickname style is a styled profile name — Unicode letters, symbols or an emoji — shown to people who don’t have your number saved. It goes in your WhatsApp profile Name, which has a 25-character limit, not in your @username, which only takes lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods — the same split between a styled name and a plain handle that Instagram uses. Style the name in the tool above, copy it, then paste it into Settings → your profile picture → Name.

|---|---|---|---|
| Profile name | Limit of 25 characters; the editor has an emoji button | Yes | People in groups who haven’t saved your number |
| Username (@) | 3–35 characters; lowercase a–z, 0–9, underscore and period; can’t be only numbers; no restricted words; must be unique | No | People who don’t have your number, instead of the number |
| About | A pre-made or custom line with emoji, shown for a duration you choose | Yes | Set by your privacy settings |

WhatsApp says usernames are rolling out gradually and can be reserved where they are not yet available, and that there is a limit to how many times a username can be changed.
How long a styled WhatsApp name is (tested 09/2026)
WhatsApp gives the 25-character limit but does not say how it counts a character. So we measured “Ishita Sharma” in eight styles on 13 September 2026 three ways: Unicode code points, UTF-16 units (how many apps store text) and visible characters. If the name box stops you before 25 visible characters, the style is being counted by one of the larger numbers.
| Style | Name | Code points | UTF-16 units | Visible characters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain | 13 | 13 | 13 | |
| Small caps | 15 | 15 | 15 | |
| Cute letters | 15 | 15 | 15 | |
| Bold italic | 17 | 29 | 17 | |
| Italic handwriting | 15 | 28 | 15 | |
| Art | 15 | 27 | 15 | |
| Tiny capitals | 17 | 17 | 17 | |
| Bold | 15 | 28 | 15 |
Small caps and cute letters stay within a couple of units of the plain name. Bold, script and fraktur letters nearly double the UTF-16 count, which is where a full name with a surname can run past 25. Every letter set and what it costs is listed in the nickname font style guide.

WhatsApp username ideas that fit the rules
A username can’t be styled, so its “style” comes from the pattern: a period between names, underscores around them, or a short word. We checked each idea below against WhatsApp’s published rules — 3 to 35 characters, lowercase a–z, digits, underscore and period, not only numbers.

| Username | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fits the rules | Lowercase letters, numbers, underscore or period only | |

Fitting the rules does not mean a username is free: WhatsApp says some usernames are held for businesses, governments or public figures, and a name already used on Instagram or Facebook is held for that account’s owner. The same plain-handle idea applies on Instagram, explained in the Instagram nickname style guide.

WhatsApp nickname style FAQ
Can I use fonts in my WhatsApp username?
No. WhatsApp usernames can contain only lowercase letters a to z, numbers, underscores and periods. Put the styled version in your profile name instead.
Why won’t WhatsApp take my whole styled name?
The profile name is limited to 25 characters, and styled letters can count as more than one. Drop the surname, or switch from bold or script letters to small caps, as the length table shows.
Who sees my WhatsApp profile name?
WhatsApp’s help page says your profile name is visible to people in groups who haven’t saved your contact. People who saved your number see the name they saved for you.
How often can I change my WhatsApp username?
WhatsApp says there is a limit to how many times you can change it but does not publish the number. After a change, your old username may become available to others; after deleting one, you have 14 days to reclaim it.
