Facebook Nickname Style: Where Styled Names Work on FB and Messenger

Facebook profile names cannot include symbols, unusual capitalization or characters from multiple languages, so styled letters do not belong there. Use a Facebook nickname style in Messenger chat nicknames, group chat names, your bio and posts instead.

Facebook nickname style: plain letters for the profile name, styled text for Messenger chat nicknames and group names

A Facebook nickname style is styled Unicode text used on Facebook and Messenger. It cannot go in your Facebook profile name, which must follow Facebook’s name rules, but it works in Messenger chat nicknames, group chat names and ordinary text such as your bio or posts. Style a name in the tool above and copy it into one of those places.

What a Facebook profile name can't include, from the Facebook Help Center, checked September 2026
Facebook’s own list of what a profile name can’t include.

Facebook’s Help Center page on which names are allowed (checked 13 September 2026, no date shown on the page) says a profile name can’t include symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation; characters from multiple languages; titles of any kind; words or phrases instead of a name; or offensive or suggestive words. It also says a nickname can be used as a first or middle name only if it is a variation of your authentic name, such as Bob instead of Robert.

Tested table: why each style breaks a Facebook name rule (09/2026)

Facebook does not say how it classifies each character, but Unicode does. We styled the name “Ananya” in fifteen letter sets on 13 September 2026 and read each character’s script and type from Unicode data (ICU), plus what NFKC normalization turns it into. Every style lands on at least one of Facebook’s listed problems: characters that belong to no language, symbols, or letters from other scripts.

Even the “Latin” styles are not safe: small caps look like unusual capitalization, and underlined letters carry combining marks. The mathematical sets (bold, script, double-struck) fold back to a plain “Ananya” under NFKC, which is why a styled profile name is easy for a system to spot. The full list of letter sets and their behaviour is in the nickname font style guide.

Facebook nickname style FAQ

How do I make my Facebook name stylish?

Not in the profile name itself: Facebook’s rules exclude symbols, unusual capitalization and mixed scripts. Put the style in your bio, in Messenger chat nicknames or in a group chat name instead, and keep your profile name as the name people know you by.

Can I use a nickname on Facebook?

Yes, as a first or middle name if it is a variation of your real name, according to Facebook’s name rules — for example Bob for Robert. A styled version of that nickname is still subject to the no-symbols rule.

Who can see a Messenger nickname?

Everyone in that chat. Messenger’s help page notes that anyone in the chat can choose a nickname, so a nickname you set can also be changed by others in the conversation.

Will other people see the style or boxes?

That depends on their device fonts. Small caps and common symbols such as ♡ and ★ display on most phones; rare scripts and new emoji are the most likely to appear as boxes.
