Pair a styled name with a username that works

A good Instagram profile keeps the two names in step: the styled Name shows personality, and the username is the same word in plain characters so people can find and tag you. When the plain version is taken, add a short, meaningful suffix with a period or underscore instead of a string of numbers.

Some styled letters are “compatibility” characters that systems can fold back into plain letters with Unicode NFKC normalization, and every mathematical letter set uses two UTF-16 units per letter, which counts against length limits. We tested the name “Aditya” in eight styles on 13 September 2026 (Unicode NFKC with ICU 73.2):

Keep your name readable and easy to find

• Keep the plain word in the username. People type plain letters when they search, so the username carries your name for search and tags while the Name carries the style.
• Use one decoration per side. A frame such as ✿ … ✿ reads as design; three stacked symbols read as noise.
• Think about screen readers. Styled letters can be read out letter by letter or skipped, so a plain username keeps your profile understandable.
• Check on another phone. Rare characters can show as empty boxes on devices that lack the font.

Why does my Instagram name show boxes on some phones?

Boxes appear when a phone has no font for a character in your name. The name is saved correctly; it just cannot be drawn on that device. Choose letters from a more common set, such as bold or small caps, if many followers report boxes.

How long can my Instagram Name be?

The Name field in the app enforces its own limit and stops you when you reach it. Remember that styled letters can count double, as the table above shows, so a name that fits in plain letters may need a lighter style.

Can I use fonts in my Instagram username?

No. Usernames accept only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Put the styled version in the Name field and keep the username plain.

Is using a styled name against Instagram’s rules?
